Synthesizing Experiences in Promotion of Backyard Poultry

Backyard poultry (BYP) has been
one of the major sources of supplemental income for women in rural
areas across the country, in addition to being a source of protein.
They bring-in income in the range of Rs.2000 annually- which almost
equals owning one acre of dryland. The Back- Yard Poultry (BYP)
incomes assume much significance in the context of rural livelihoods
of poor.
In spite of its overwhelming
importance, BYP has not been a focal area for public investments. The
requirements of this informal sector in terms of public investment
support are little known. Most of the documented experiences so far in
this sector are mainly focused on evolving new breeds for BYP and
their supply chain and vaccination. However, several initiatives
across the country are slowly gaining momentum recently with efforts
from Government agencies, civil society and private industry.
A synthesis of these emerging
experiences across the country and deliberations based on an analysis
of such experiences would help in evolving a framework for public
investment/ policy support in promoting BYP. With this in view, the
Rainfed Livestock Network represented by WASSAN, the Project
Directorate on Poultry, IPSA (Hyderabad chapter) and the South Asia
Pro-Poor Livestock Program of FAO - NDDB are jointly organizing a two
days experience sharing workshop on Back Yard Poultry. AP Drought
Adaptation Initiative of Govt. of AP and the Ford Foundation are
funding the workshop.
The deliberations in the workshop
will focus on
-
Sharing of field experiences in
promoting BYP
-
Identifying major areas of
concern both for policy and research
-
Evolving a future course of
action.
